Eating Out in Lake Chapala

Updated: Apr 15, 2022

Lemon Chicken at Cocinart

So many restaurants and so little time. The shear number of restaurants in Chapala and Ajijic is staggering. If there is one thing we all love to do, it's eating out. At Lakeside, eating out is very much a social activity as well. Where good friends get together, and old acquaintances renewed. Most restaurants offer outdoor seating, and with our perfect year around climate, outdoor dining is the way to go 365 days a year!

The Lakeside area offers a large variety of restaurants from typical Mexican, to Chinese, Indian, Thai, seafood, grill, pizza, and burger joints. Every type of food and ethnic origin is represented. In Lake Chapala and we truly lack for nothing. All price points are well represented too. The top meal shown on this page is a delicious lemon chicken for only 130 pesos ($6.50) from a very popular place called Cocinart in downtown Ajijic. The other a breakfast burrito for 85 peoss ($4.00) from Delicias in Chapala. Stellar prices for such a large meals. Of course, restaurants vary and it is easy to pay more for similar meals.

Many of the best restaurants have been open for years and newer ones are popping up all the time. Some make it and some don't. But part of the adventure of living Lakeside is trying out different places and different creations.

There are two major 'restaurant rows' Lakeside. The first is located 6 km (4 miles) west of Ajijic on the Carretera (highway). It is a strip of restaurants right on the lake and they are very popular with the folks from Guadalajara on weekends. These are established restaurants featuring awesome lake views. Most feature bands and dancing especially on Fridays and the weekends. This is a mid afternoon to early evening kind of place with most restaurants shutting down by 8;00 pm or so depending on time of year.

The second row of restaurants can be found on the Malecon in Chapala. These too are extremely popular with the crowd from Guadalajara and feature bands and mariachi. Some are right on the Malecon proper with more located on the road east of the Malecon. Spectacular lakeside sunsets are free from both locations.
