Eating Out in Lake Chapala
So many restaurants and so little time. The shear number of restaurants in Chapala and Ajijic is staggering. If there is one thing we all love to do, it's eating out. At Lakeside, eating out is very much a social activity as well. It is where good friends get together, and often times, old acquaintances renewed.
The Lakeside area offers a large variety of restaurants from typical Mexican, to Chinese, Indian, Thai, seafood, grill, and burger joints. Every type of food and ethnic origin is represented. In Lake Chapala and we truly lack for nothing. All price points are well represented too. The meal shown in the picture, for example, is only 85 pesos. It is a delicious lemon chicken from a very popular place called Cocinart in downtown Ajijic. That's only $4.00 USD or $5.65 CDN. A stellar price for such a large meal. Of course, restaurants vary and it is easy to pay more for similar meals.
Many of the best restaurants have been open for years and newer ones are popping up all the time. Some make it and some don't. But part of the adventure of living Lakeside is trying out different places and different creations.
There are two major 'restaurant rows' Lakeside. One is located 6 km (4 miles) west of town on the Carretera. It is a strip of restaurant right on the lake and they are very popular with the folks from Guadalajara on weekends. They are all long established restaurants and all very good with awesome views. Most feature bands and dancing. This is a mid afternoon to early evening kind of place with most places shutting down by 8;00 pm or so depending on time of year.
Another row of restaurants can be found on the malacon in Chapala. These too are extremely popular with the crowd from Guadalajara and feature bands and dancing. Some are right on the malacon and some are more on the lake after the malacon ends. Spectacular sunsets are free from both locations.
