A Local Perspective: The Heart of Life in Lake Chapala

The essence of life here was beautifully captured in a heartfelt post by a local expat, Phyllis, who wrote:

I love living in a village of diverse folks from all over the world.

I love living where love is abundant, all people are united, and where the poor people are shown love, compassion and care.

I love being able to say "I love you" to people who realize that love is not a limited resource and where they don't hold it back.I love that I can declare my differences without being judged and stereotyped.

I love to live where people thrive on our natural resources, kids and dogs play outside in the neighborhoods, and where it is safe to walk safely anywhere I want to go.

I love live where the loud noise I hear is fireworks and not gunfire.

I love living with joy instead of anger.

I love the open arms and hearts extended to me by local folks, even though I'm an immigrant.

I love that people in my village cooperate by common sense for the common good.

I love this culture of not complaining!

I love my friends, American and Mexican, who are loyal, accepting and who accept my love and share theirs.

I love that happiness here is based upon relationships and not money.

I love Mexican culture and the sweetness of the local people.

This is the day-to-day reality for many who have chosen to retire in Lake Chapala. It’s not just about escaping something — it’s about embracing a life rich in community, culture, and connection.

A Different Definition of Success

Another expat, Joyanne, shared her experience after relocating to Mexico:

What's YOUR measure of success? Since I moved to Mexico, I've been challenged to answer that question, differently than ever before. And, as a result, I've come to realize that our lives can be measured in sunrises and sunsets; the days we experience beauty, connection and joy... and the days when we get to share our expansive experiences with others. Does anything less even matter? Now that I support others in transforming their own lives by moving to Mexico, I can honestly say from my altered perspective, little other than beauty, joy and connection deserves my attention. Being right? Nope. Being rich? No, I already AM rich in the most fundamental ways and because I don't watch TV, my perspective isn't skewed by media and curated realities. And, real success isn't being "perfect" either (whatever that means). I've intentionally put myself into a place and a culture where I've had to confront my own assumptions, upgrade my measuring stick or toss it out the window entirely. And what I've come to know is just how precious time is to ALL of us. Not a day goes by where I'm not reminded of the incredible gift I have to simply breathe in, get up from my chair and walk where I choose to, to eat lovely foods, have engaging conversations and challenge myself, more than before, to step into and fully occupy GRACE as a way of being. I can't say that I've got it entirely down... yet. But I do know that being in Mexico has afforded me the opportunity to awaken more deeply and to be more mindful of my choices. I'm no longer worrying or struggling with a BIG fat mortgage. I'm no longer pulling myself out of bed on cold, dark, drizzly winter days. I'm no longer having to do everything by myself. All of this, and more, are some of the many gifts that Mexico lays at my feet each morning. And for that, I am grateful beyond words Life IS Beautiful,
