If you are planning your move to Lake Chapala in 2026, you’ve likely noticed that the "old ways" of handling Mexican residency are shifting. The administrative system has become significantly more professionalized, and with that comes a more rigid adherence to specific financial formulas.

The biggest change for 2026 is the adoption of the UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización) as the primary way for calculating for economic solvency. Up until now, residency requirements were tied to the "Minimum Wage," which has seen massive annual spikes in recent years. By switching to the UMA—which is indexed to inflation—the Mexican government has created a more stable path for expats to show economic solvency.

Here is the breakdown of the 2026 UMA math you need to know to secure your visa:

The Magic Number: What is the UMA in 2026?

As of February 1, 2026, the official daily value of the UMA is $117.31 MXN.

When you visit a Mexican consulate, they use specific "multipliers" against this daily rate to determine if you have the financial means to live in Mexico. Depending on the type of residency you seek, you will be looking at two primary multipliers: 680x and 1,140x.

1. Temporary Residency: The 680x Multiplier

Most expats begin with Temporary Residency. To qualify, the consulate looks at your average monthly net income over the last six months.

 * The Formula: 117.31 (Daily UMA) X 680

 * The Requirement: $79,771 MXN per month.

What this means in USD/CAD:

Depending on the exchange rate (using a projected 18:1 ratio), you should be prepared to show roughly $4,432 USD or $6,150 CAD in monthly pension or salary deposits.

2. Permanent Residency: The 1,140x Multiplier

If you are already retired and wish to jump straight to Permanent Residency, the bar is set higher. The consulate looks for a much more robust monthly income.

 * The Formula: 117.31 (Daily UMA) X 1,140

 * The Requirement: $133,733 MXN per month.

What this means in USD/CAD:

This equates to approximately $7,430 USD or $10,300 CAD per month. Note that most consulates will only grant "direct" Permanent Residency to those who are officially of retirement age and drawing a pension.

3. The Savings Route (Investment Multipliers)

If your monthly income doesn't quite hit those marks, you can qualify using your savings or investment balances over the last 12 months:

Residency Type Multiplier 2026 Requirement (Pesos) Approx. USD (18:1)

Temporary 11,460 x $1,344,373 MXN ~$74,687 USD

Permanent 45,850 x $5,378,664 MXN ~$298,815 USD

Why "The Professionalized System" Matters

In the past, some consulates were "flexible." In 2026, that flexibility has largely vanished. The digitalization of the SRE (Secretary of Foreign Affairs) systems means:

 * Exact Math: If you are short by even $10 USD due to an exchange rate fluctuation, your application may be denied.

 * Consistency: The UMA is now the standard. While some consulates may still reference "Minimum Wage" (which is higher), most have transitioned to the UMA to align with federal law.

 * Proof of Transfers: Don't just bring a summary. Consulates want to see 6–12 months of original, stamped bank statements showing a consistent flow of funds.
