Wondering how safe Lake Chapala is? If you’re considering relocating to Lake Chapala, one of the most common questions you’ll likely have is: How safe is it? Having lived in Ajijic for 14 years, we’ve witnessed firsthand how safe our little pocket of paradise is.

In this blog post, we’ll provide an in-depth look at the safety situation here and offer helpful tips for ensuring your safety while living or visiting Lake Chapala.

Lake Chapala: A Beautiful, Safe Oasis for Expats

Located in the heart of the Mexican Highlands, Lake Chapala is not just known for its stunning natural beauty but also for its welcoming expat community. It’s one of the most popular destinations for foreign retirees and expats in Mexico due to its moderate climate, picturesque landscapes, and vibrant culture. But like any move abroad, concerns about safety naturally arise.

After having visited and toured multiple regions of Mexico, we can confidently say that Lake Chapala is one of the safest places to reside or vacation to in Mexico. Yes, the area has grown significantly over the years, but the large and well integrated expat community has helped in keeping this small area safe, Many of the people we talk to point out the recent news about cartel activities, but realistically these are in areas well outside of the Ajijic area.

How Safety Has Improved Over Time in Lake Chapala

When we first arrived at Lake Chapala, the area was much quieter. Back then, there were plenty of empty lots, and not much development had taken place. Over time, however, the community has expanded and evolved into a much more vibrant, safe, and organized place to live. The streets are cleaner, and many of the older properties have been renovated, creating a more welcoming environment for both locals and expats.

We now live just outside of Ajijic itself, and it’s hard to overstate just how beautiful and peaceful it is here. Our neighbors are wonderful, and the general atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. Ajijic village, along with Chapala has seen noticeable improvements, and these positive changes have also contributed to making the community feel safer overall.

Safety Tips for Living in Lake Chapala: Common Sense Goes a Long Way

When living in any foreign country, applying a bit of common sense can go a long way in helping you stay safe. Lake Chapala is no different. Here are a few key safety tips that we and other long-time residents follow to ensure a secure living experience:

  1. Keep Your Nose Clean: As with any location, avoiding involvement in illegal activities is crucial. This includes staying away from drug purchases, which can expose you to unnecessary risks.

  2. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Whether you’re strolling through Ajijic or running errands in Chapala, always be mindful of your surroundings. Walk with purpose, shoulders back, and avoid distractions like checking your phone constantly. Don't be silly and leave your purse unattended in a grocery cart while you wander down the aisles!

  3. Avoid Late-Night Outings: While Lake Chapala is generally safe, it’s always better to get home by a reasonable hour, typically around 10 PM. Like in any community, some areas can feel quieter and less secure after dark. Fortunately, most activities and dancing takes place between 5-9!

  4. Secure Your Home: Just as you would in any other country, take the necessary precautions to protect your home. Ensure windows and doors are locked, and consider a home security system for extra peace of mind. Think of security as either perimeter security or interior (or both). Many newcomers think that we are afraid, or living in a hostile country, when they see the high walls and barbed wire, but really it's both part cultural and pro-active.

  5. Keep Important Documents Safe: Carry only what you need when out and about. Leave your passport in a secure place at home and carry copies of important paperwork when you’re out. Residency visa cards should be carried with you.

  6. Be Friendly with Your Neighbors: Building relationships with your neighbors not only makes life here more enjoyable, but it also adds an extra layer of security. In small communities like those around Lake Chapala, looking out for each other is a key part of the safety culture.

  7. Volunteer and Get Involved: There are many nonprofit organizations in the area that welcome volunteers. Engaging with these groups can help you build connections, integrate into the community, and stay informed about local safety concerns.

  8. Don't look like a tourist fresh off the boat: If you are just visiting Lake Chapala, welcome! But bone up on currency conversion and the Mexican peso. Learn to recognize a 10 peso coin and 50 pesos bill. Don't tip your hand wondering out loud "How much is 50 pesos?" This just opens the door for anyone nearby as an easy mark.

Is Lake Chapala Safe from Cartels?

A concern that often comes up in conversations about safety in Mexico is the presence of drug cartels. The truth is, the situation here in Lake Chapala is different from what you might hear about in other regions. While certain parts of Mexico are dominated by cartel activity, this is not the case in the Lakeside area.

The cartels, where they do exist, typically do not target expats or engage in the types of activities that affect the daily lives of regular residents. In fact, in many parts of Mexico, cartels function as a sort of “de facto” government, providing services like street maintenance, utilities, and even schools in some areas. The violence you may hear about in the news is generally between rival gangs and rarely affects innocent bystanders or expats.

In Lakeside, it’s important to note that the area is not a hotspot for cartel-related violence. The expat community can live in relative peace without fear of cartel-related issues. As long as you avoid illegal activities, the likelihood of being involved in anything dangerous related to the cartels is extremely low.

Security in Gated vs. Non-Gated Communities

Another common question is whether gated communities are significantly safer than non-gated ones. The short answer is that safety doesn’t necessarily depend on whether you live in a gated community or not. Both types of communities in Lake Chapala have their advantages.

Many expats feel more secure with the added peace of mind a gated community provides, with guards and security cameras offering an extra layer of protection. However, it’s more about securing your home and being vigilant about your surroundings than relying solely on a gate or guard.

Whether you’re in a gated or non-gated area, the same principles apply. Lock up your home, be mindful of when and where you go out (particularly in parts of the larger cities like Chapala and Jocotepec), don't advertise that you are going out of town, have a neighbor or trusted employee watch over your home, and avoid risky behavior. These are the best, common sense, practices for staying safe in any environment

Safety and Security in Lake Chapala: Final Thoughts

Lake Chapala offers one of the safest and most peaceful living environments in Mexico. The area’s large expat community, the friendly nature of its residents, and the absence of significant cartel-related issues make it an ideal place for expats seeking both relaxation and safety.

Of course, no one can guarantee your safety 100%, but following simple safety practices

—staying aware of your surroundings, being cautious with your personal belongings, and maintaining good relationships with your neighbors—can significantly reduce your risk.

If you follow common-sense precautions and treat your new community with respect, you’ll quickly find that Lake Chapala is not just a safe place to live, but also one of the loveliest, most welcoming communities we’ve ever experienced.
