After having visited and toured multiple regions of Mexico, we can confidently say that Lake Chapala is one of the safest places to reside or vacation to in Mexico. Yes, the area has grown significantly over the years, but the large and well integrated expat community has helped in keeping this small area safe, Many of the people we talk to point out the recent news about cartel activities, but realistically these are in areas well outside of the Ajijic area.

How Safety Has Improved Over Time in Lake Chapala

When we first arrived at Lake Chapala, the area was much quieter. Back then, there were plenty of empty lots, and not much development had taken place. Over time, however, the community has expanded and evolved into a much more vibrant, safe, and organized place to live. The streets are cleaner, and many of the older properties have been renovated, creating a more welcoming environment for both locals and expats.

We now live just outside of Ajijic itself, and it’s hard to overstate just how beautiful and peaceful it is here. Our neighbors are wonderful, and the general atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. Ajijic village, along with Chapala has seen noticeable improvements, and these positive changes have also contributed to making the community feel safer overall.

Safety Tips for Living in Lake Chapala: Common Sense Goes a Long Way

When living in any foreign country, applying a bit of common sense can go a long way in helping you stay safe. Lake Chapala is no different. Here are a few key safety tips that we and other long-time residents follow to ensure a secure living experience:

Keep Your Nose Clean: As with any location, avoiding involvement in illegal activities is crucial. This includes staying away from drug purchases, which can expose you to unnecessary risks.
Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Whether you’re strolling through Ajijic or running errands in Chapala, always be mindful of your surroundings. Walk with purpose, shoulders back, and avoid distractions like checking your phone constantly. Don't be silly and leave your purse unattended in a grocery cart while you wander down the aisles!
Avoid Late-Night Outings: While Lake Chapala is generally safe, it’s always better to get home by a reasonable hour, typically around 10 PM. Like in any community, some areas can feel quieter and less secure after dark. Fortunately, most activities and dancing takes place between 5-9!

Many newcomers think that we are afraid, or living in a hostile country, when they see the high walls and barbed wire, but really it's both part cultural and pro-active.
Keep Important Documents Safe: Carry only what you need when out and about. Leave your passport in a secure place at home and carry copies of important paperwork when you’re out. Residency visa cards should be carried with you.
Be Friendly with Your Neighbors: Building relationships with your neighbors not only makes life here more enjoyable, but it also adds an extra layer of security. In small communities like those around Lake Chapala, looking out for each other is a key part of the safety culture.
