Last night, Michaela and I hosted a small dinner party with two close couples we’ve met since moving to Mexico. As the evening unfolded, something struck me in a very powerful way. After more than 12 years of living in Mexico, I was sitting at my own table where Spanish—not English—was the primary language spoken. It felt natural, comfortable, and deeply rewarding.

Around the table was a true reflection of life in Lake Chapala, Mexico. Michaela is from Romania and speaks fluent Spanish. Another Romanian friend, who has built his life here with his Mexican partner, is also fluent. One guest was from Guatemala and bilingual in Spanish and English. His girlfriend is Mexican and bilingual as well. The only language everyone shared? Spanish. And that’s exactly what we used.

It was one of those moments that makes you pause and reflect. For me, it highlighted just how far my life has evolved from my very sheltered upbringing in Canada—and how incredibly rich life has become since becoming an expat in Lake Chapala.

Reinvent Yourself by Becoming an Expat in Lake Chapala

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re asking yourself some important questions:

  • Are you ready for a change?

  • Do you want more adventure, culture, and connection in your life?

  • Are you tired of the grind in Canada or the United States?

Many people initially consider retiring in Lake Chapala because it’s known for its low cost of living, excellent climate, quality healthcare, and the fact that English is widely spoken. Those are all valid—and important—reasons. But they only scratch the surface of what life here truly offers.

Lake Chapala is a place where you can reinvent yourself.

Here, you can immerse yourself in a vibrant culture, learn or improve your Spanish, and build friendships with people from literally all over the world. You can wake up each day surrounded by natural beauty, colonial towns, rich traditions, and a slower, more meaningful pace of life.

A Global Community in One Beautiful Place

One of the most surprising aspects of life as an expat in Lake Chapala is the diversity. Yes, there is a large and welcoming English-speaking expat community—but there is also so much more beyond that bubble.

Living here gives you the opportunity to stretch yourself socially, culturally, and personally. You can choose how deep you want to go. Some people are perfectly happy staying mostly within the expat community. Others, like us, find tremendous joy in building relationships across cultures, languages, and backgrounds.

That dinner party was a reminder that Lake Chapala is not just a retirement destination—it’s a world of possibilities.
