Independent Living Options In Lake Chapala

Updated: Aug 13

The Moon Retirement Home, Ajijic, Mexico

Lake Chapala has been a retirement destination for at least 70 years now. Featuring a low cost of living and an incredible climate (often reported to be the second best in the world) you owe it to yourself to come and check it out.

With the influx of foreigners, comes the increased demand for retirement homes. Unfortunately, the Lake Chapala only has a small hand full of options for "independent living" or "aging in place" which is what so many of you are asking for. The reason for this is threefold. It is an incredibly large investment to make initially and the profit margins are small; credit is very expensive to get in Mexico; and although there is a huge demand by gringos for these types of facilities, it is not the culture of Mexican people to put their elderly in homes.

In this blog I will feature two different facilities in a couple different price ranges.

For a list of most of the assisted living and independent retirement homes Lakeside you can view my blog Assisted Living & Retirement Homes Lake Chapala.

The Moon

The Moon is a luxury facility, completed in 2018, offering long term residential rentals to independent individuals over the age of fifty. We offer hotel-style living and include breakfast and dinner, weekly housekeeping, laundry and most utilities in our monthly fee.

It is an exclusive community with 16 units in total including one studio, 12 one-bedroom suites and three two-bedroom, two-bathroom villas. All are ground floor units without steps. Prices for the units are as follows:

Studio (245 sq. ft) are $1200 USD/month

Casita (720 sq. ft.) 1 bedroom/1 bath are $1700 USD/month

Villa (1440 sq. ft.) 2 bedroom/2 bath are $2700 USD/month

(Second occupant is an additional charge of $500 USD/month)

Rents are all-inclusive. Amenities feature:

  • breakfast & supper

  • weekly maid

  • all utilities (internet, phone, electricity, satellite TV, water, and gas

  • heated pool

  • gym

  • off street parking

Note that this is for independent living. No health care services or transportation services are provided at this facility.

Ohana

Ohana is the dream of Alonzo and Ana, both of which studied in Guadalajara to become geriatric nurses. Located out in San Juan Cosala, a neighboring village to Ajijic, they currently have a nice mix of foreigners and Mexican citizens staying. The original house has 8 rooms and the specialize in dementia and Alzheimer cases. A second house which has 12 lake and mountain view rooms is independent living. Ohana offers short or long term stays and provide 3 meals per day plus housekeeping and transportation service for doctors visits for as low as $1200 USD per month, or for full care service up to $1800 per month.

For more information about these facilities, contact me through this website or our Facebook Page. We're always here to help. Thanks for reading!
