Quality Elder Care In Lake Chapala
In 2011, the oldest members of the Baby Boom generation started turning 65. This trend will continue for the next 19 years until 2030, with 10,000 baby boomers each year turning 65. With rising costs of health care and nursing home prices becoming out of sight in the U.S. and Canada, where will they all go for quality, reasonable cost living during their final decades? Lake Chapala may be the ultimate answer, where a large cottage industry has recently grown up around the need for quality elder care at low cost. Almost all the facilities are quite small with just a handful of casitas and/or rooms for up to 10-12 people. This helps to provide personalized attention and eliminates bureaucratic overhead.
In this blog, I have randomly picked 3 elder care homes just to give you an idea of pricing and the range of facilities available.
Alicia's Convalescent Home
General monthly fees for Alicia's Convalescent Homes are between $1200- $1600 USD. It should be noted that these fees do not include doctors visits or medications.
They provide 3 different levels of care:
Assisted Living - For people who can still do everything by themselves but sometimes need a little bit of help
Intermediate Care - For people who have a disability but mentally are okay
Full Care or Nursing Home - For residents who have Alzheimer's or Dementia
In all their houses they provide 24/7 care, 3 meals a day (a balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables), laundry and daily room service, WiFi, local transportation, cable TV and daily exercise.
They have 4 locations in Ajijic with one being a completely locked facility as many of the clients are stricken with Alzheimer's.
More independent living is available for those who are still of able mind and body in Abbeyfield by the malacon in Ajijic.
Abbeyfield has 5 casitas and 4 rooms. The price range from 11,000 pesos ($600 USD) for a room up to 18,000 pesos ($975 USD) for a Casita. They currently have no vacancies but you can go on a wait list to gain entry
They are not a care or nursing home and the staff are not allowed or qualified to give personal care other than in an emergency and only for a limited time. Their staff is also not permitted to administer medication.
A nutritious evening dinner is prepared daily by the House Manager and the ingredients for a buffet style breakfast are also provided. Residents are on their own for lunch with fixings available.
While the staff run the home on a day to day basis, a voluntary committee is responsible for the well being of the residents and overseeing the home.
Before moving in, you will be asked to visit and look around the home. They offer a 2 to 3 month trial period for prospective residents in a furnished en-suite room.
Abbeyfield residents are free to come and go as they please, there are no restrictions or petty rules and residents are asked to bring their own furniture. The monthly rent and service charges are kept reasonable as Abbeyfield is a 'not for profit' charitable organization.
Included for the fees are:
On site staff
24 hour emergency call system
Electricity, heating, hot and cold water
Full maintenance of property
One home cooked meal each day, the ingredients for a buffet style breakfast and self-made lunch
The use of all common areas
A fully equipped laundry room
Although most illnesses can be managed within Abbeyfield, should a resident become too frail to continue to live safely in the home, they will provide assistance in finding an alternate location that can provide the care required.
Mi Casita is a full service care facility. Depending on the level of care required, their fees range from $1,500 to $2,000 US dollars per month. Fees include walkers, wheelchairs, oxygen equipment and transportation to off-site medical appointments, as needed. Incidentals such as medication and personal medical supplies are not included.
They feature private rooms with full bath
Cable TV in all rooms
Local and long distance telephone to the US and Canada
High speed internet
Enclosed patio and TV for social gathering
24 hour care with a full time nurse on staff at all time
Personal hygiene care
Customized case management
So from Independent Living to Full Care Homes, everything is available in Ajijic and at a fraction of the cost of north of the border. A reminder that this is only a sampling of the many homes available and you need to look at many to see which is the best fit for your situation and budget.
If you have any questions or comments, please post them here or contact me personally through this website. Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing from you. See you Ajijic!
